5. Competition
The purpose of the game is to send the ball over the net with the aim of grounding the ball on the opponents’ side and to avoid having the ball hit the ground your side.
Each team has the right to 3 touches of the ball before sending it to the opponent’s side (the blocking touch does not count)
The ball is served and the player serving must send the ball over the net to the opponents’ court.
The ball is played until it is grounded, send out of the court or until one team doesn’t manage to send it correctly to the other court.
In catchball the team that wins the rally they receive a point (scoring system point per rally).
When the receiving team wins the rally, they win one point and the right to serve next.

5.1 Court
The court is a 18 x 9 m rectangle, surrounded by an open space of 3 meters on each side. The playing space must be at least 7 meters in height. Above the center line of the rectangle a net is installed in a vertical position. The upper edge must be set at a height of 2.43 m.

5.2 Teams
A team is formed out of maximum 6 players on the field, a trainer and 2-4 back-ups. One of the players (not the Libero) must be identified as the team captain and mentioned in the match card)
Mixed team must always have 2 players representing each gender on the field, at all times of the game. The referee can disqualify a team that isn’t respecting this rule.

5.3 Game Play
A team wins a point:
1. if it can ground the ball in the opposing team’s court;
2. if the opposing team commits a foul;
3. if the opposing team is punished with penalties.

A team commits a foul if they execute an action in contradiction with the game’s rules. If two or more fouls are committed in a row, only the first one is taken into consideration. Double foul or the rally is replayed if two or more fouls are committed at the same time by the opposing team.

Consequences of winning a rally
The game start the moment the ball is served and it finishes when the ball is out of play. If the serving team wins the rally, it wins a point and is allowed to continue serving.
If the receiving team wins the rally, it wins a point and has the right to serve.

To win the match
The match is won by the team with the most points at the end of the two halves of 10 minutes.
In the eventuality of a tie, in the elimination rounds and finals, a maximum of 5 more rallies will be played.

5.4 The start formation of the team
Before starting the game, each trainer must present the starting formation of the team through a position report. This report, correctly filled and signed, is give to the second referee or the score keeper.
Players who are no part of the starting formation are considered back-ups in that set.

5.5 Actions and game situations
Ball in play
The ball is in play starting with the moment of the serving which was authorized by the first referee.
Ball out of play
The ball is out of play the moment a foul was committed and the referee has signalled it with a whistle blow.
In court ball
The ball is in the court when it is grounded on the courts surface, including the delimitation lines.
The ball is out of the court when:
-the part of the ball that touches the ground is outside the delimitation lines;
-it touches an object outside of the court, the wall or a person outside of the game;
-it touches antennas, cable, string, poles or the net itself which is on the outside of the 3m open space;
-it passes through the vertical plan of the net, partially or through the passing space underneath it;

Simultaneous contact
Two or three player can touch the ball at the same time.
When two (three) players touch the ball simultaneous, it is counted as two (three) hits (excepting the blocking move). If they try to play the ball, but only one of the players touch the ball, it is counted as an only hit. A collision between two players is not considered a foul.
If 2 opponents touch the ball simultaneously over the net, the ball remains in play, and the team receiving the ball has the right to three new hits. If a ball in this situation falls out of the court, the foul is given to the team on the opposite part of the net. In the eventuality of a ball in this situation is held, it is considered a double foul and the relay is replayed.

5.6 Foul in ball play
Four hits: a team that hits the ball 4 times before sending it to the opposing court
Helped hit: a player rests on a player or a structure/object in th cort with the purpose of hitting the ball
Hold: a player incorrectly hits a ball which is held or thrown
Double contact: when a player hits the ball two times consecutively or the ball touches more parts of its body consecutively.

5.7 Net play
Ball that touches the net
The ball can touch the net during its passing to the opposing court.
Ball in the net
A ball that is sent in the net can be replayed within the 3 hits of the team
If the ball breaks the net or it gets tangled, the relay is cancelled and replayed.
Passing over the net/ Net player
At blocking, a player is allowed to touch the ball over the net in the opposing team’s area under the condition of not interfering in the game play of the opponent, before or during his attack move.
After the attack move, the player is allowed to have his hand over the net in the opponent’s area under the condition that the touching of the ball was done in its own court.
Under the net
It is permitted for a player to be on the opposing court under the condition of not interfering in the game play of the opponent.
It is permitted for a player to touch the opposing court with his foot or hand, as long as a part of the foot/hand touches the centre line (or is above it).

Fouls of the net player
A player touches the ball or an opponent in the opposing court before or during his attack move.
A player goes under the net on the opposing court and obstructing an opponent.
A player goes on the opposing court.
A player touches the net or antennas during the action of the ball being played, if the touch affects the game play.

5.8 Serving
The service is the action of launching the ball into game play by the player in the back right side, placed in the serving area.

5.9 Libero player
Each team is entitled to a player among the 12 players, who is specialized in defense called the Libero.
The Libero must wear equipment in which at least the shirt is a different and contrasting colour than the rest of the team members.
Allowed gameplay for the Libero:
- the Libero is permitted to replace any of the players in the second line. He can perform only as a second line player and I not allowed to execute an effective attack.
- he cannot serve or block
-a player is not allowed to make an effective attack if at the moment of contact with the ball he is higher than the superior edge of the net and the ball was placed by the Libero in the attack zone. The ball can be attacked only if the Libero executing the same move is behind the attack line.

5.10 Score Card
Is the document on which the technical facts regarding the game are shown and is the official document of the match.
At the end of the match, team captains have the responsibility of signing th score card in order for the score to be certified. In the case in which a team captain refuses to sign the score card, the score will be announced by the referee.

5.12 Game Time
Each match will have 2 halves of each 10 minute with one minute break between them.
In the eventuality of a tie, in the elimination rounds and finals, a maximum of 5 more rallies will be played.
There are 2 time-outs accepted with the cumulative time of 1 minute per match. There are no time-outs or replacements in the last 5 minutes of each half.

5.14 Replacements
During the match an unlimited number of replacements can be done. A player who has already been replaced can re-enter the court to replace another team member, during and when the game is stopped, but only with the consent of the referee and only through the special area that was established by the organizers and only when the replaced player has left the court.

5.16 Official ball
During the competition, the organizer offers the team the official ball of the game.

5.17 Equipment
Each team member must wear identical tops and shorts which are numbered.
The organizers offer each participant a special vest and all athletes have the responsibility to wear it if they don’t dispose of uniforms that differentiate them through color from the opposing team.
The team captain will wear an armlet in order to differentiate themselves from the rest of the team.
No player is allowed to use equipment that can harm them or any other athlete in the game, this including rings, earrings, bracelets etc.

RULES Newcomb/Catchball regulations- modified for Corporate Games


Two teams each having 6 players on the court at a time. Minimum 2 reserves, maximum 6.

Play begins with the server throwing the ball over the net to the opponents.

The ball remains in play being thrown back and forth across the net until there is a miss.

Three players may play the ball before throwing it over the net.

If the receiving team misses, the serving team scores a point and the next play begins with the same server. If the serving team misses, it loses the serve.

Time out or replacements are not permitted in the last 5 minutes of each half.

Each match with have 2 halves of 10 minute with one minute break. In case of draw at the end of the match there will be 5 more gameplays allowed for 5 points. For elimination and finals winner is best of 3 set up to 15 points.


Team must wear numbered matching shirts. Non marking sport shoes only allowed in the court.
