5. Game Play
5.1 Table
The superior part, called the game surface, must be rectangular with a length of 2.74 m and 1.52 wide, placed horizontally 76 cm above the ground. The game surface does not include the sides of the table under the game surface lines.
The table’s game surface can be made out of any material as long as it allows the ball to jump almost 23 cm for a ball that was left to fall from a 30 cm height.
The table’s game surface will be of dark, mate colour, with a 2 cm wide line on the sides of the table and 2 cm wide line for the ends of the table. The game surface will be split in 2 equal courts by the vertically positioned net which is parallel to the end lines.
For the doubles challenge each court will be split again in 2 equal parts, through a central line that is 3 mm wide, parallel to the sidelines.

5.2 Score Card
Is the document on which the technical facts regarding the game are shown and is the official document of the match.
At the end of the match, team captains have the responsibility of signing th score card in order for the score to be certified. In the case in which a team captain refuses to sign the score card, the score will be announced by the referee.

5.3 Players
Matches are for individual and double.

5.4 Rounds
The competition is in group system, usually formed out of 4 athletes/teams of doubles, followed by an elimination tournament.

5.5 Service
The service must start with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the server's stationary free hand.
The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16cm after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck.
As the ball is falling the server shall strike it so that it touches first his court and then, after passing over or around the net a, touches directly the receiver's court; in doubles, the ball shall touch successively the right half court of server and receiver.
From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server or his doubles partner and by anything they wear or carry. As soon as the ball has been projected, the server’s free arm shall be removed from the space between the ball and the net.
It is the responsibility of the player to serve so that the umpire or the assistant umpire can be satisfied that he complies with the requirements of the Laws, and either may decide that a service is incorrect.
If the referee is not sure about the legality of a service he may, on the first occasion in a match, interrupt play and warn the server; but any subsequent service by that player or his doubles partner which is not clearly legal shall be considered incorrect.
Any subsequent service of doubtful legality of that player or his doubles partner will result in a point to the receiver.
Exceptionally, the umpire may relax the requirements for a good service where he is satisfied that compliance is prevented by physical disability.

5.6 The return
The ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it passes over or around the net assembly and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.

5.7 The order of play
In singles, the server shall first make a service, the receiver shall then make a return and thereafter server and receiver alternately shall each make a return.
In doubles, the server shall first make a service, the receiver shall then make a return, the partner of the server shall then make a return, the partner of the receiver shall then make a return and thereafter each player in turn in that sequence shall make a return.

5.8 Redoing the ball rally
The game play must be redone if:
- if in service the ball, in passing over or around the net assembly, touches it, provided the service is otherwise good or the ball is obstructed by the receiver or his partner;
- if the service is delivered when the receiving player or pair is not ready, provided that neither the receiver nor his partner attempts to strike the ball
- if failure to make a service or a return to comply with the Regulation is due to a disturbance outside the control of the player;
- if the game is interrupted by the lead referee or the secondary referee
The game play may be interrupted if:
- to correct an error in the order of serving, receiving or ends;
- to introduce the expedite system;
- to warn or penalize a player or adviser;
- because the conditions of play are disturbed in a way which could affect the outcome of the ball rally

5.9 The point
If the game isn’t stopped a point is lost:
- when his opponent fails to make a correct service;
- if his opponent fails to make a correct return;
- if, after he has made a service or a return, the ball touches anything other than the net assembly before being struck by his opponent;
- if the ball passes over his court or beyond his end line without touching his court, after being struck by his opponent;
- if his opponent obstructs the ball;
- if an opponent deliberately strikes the ball twice in succession;
- if his opponent strikes the ball with a side of the racquet blade whose surface does not comply with the requirements
- if his opponent, or anything his opponent wears or carries, moves the game surface or net assembly
- if his opponent's free hand touches the playing surface while the ball is in play

5.10 The set
A game shall be won by the player or pair first scoring 11 points unless both players or pairs score 10 points, when the game shall be won by the first player or pair subsequently gaining a lead of 2 points.

5.11 The match
A match consist in one of the player/teams winning 3 sets (3 out of 5 sets to 11)

5.12 Choosing the court side and the server
Choosing the court side and the server in the first game is decided by coin toss. The player/ team who won the coin toss can chose:
a. To be the one to serve in the first game of the match, case in which the opponent will chose the side of the court
b. Choose the side of the court in which case the opponent will chose to be the server or the receiver
c. Ask the opponent to choose one of the options mentioned above
After each 2 points have been scored the receiving player or pair shall become the serving player or pair and so on until the end of the game, unless both players/ pairs score 10 points when the sequences of serving and receiving shall be the same but each player shall serve for only 1 point in turn.
In each game of a doubles match, the pair having the right to serve first shall choose which of them will do so and in the first game of a match the receiving pair shall decide which of them will receive first; in subsequent games of the match, the first server having been chosen, the first receiver shall be the player who served to him in the preceding game. In doubles, at each change of service the previous receiver shall become the server and the partner of the previous server shall become the receiver.
The player or pair starting at one end in a game shall start at the other end in the next game of the match and in the last possible game of a match the players or pairs shall change ends when first one player or pair scores 5 points.

5.13 Service fouls, receiving and field switch
If a player receives or serves, without the right to do so, the game will be interrupted immediately when the foul is noticed and will be resumed by the player who was next to serve according to the order established at the beginning of the game.
If players didn’t switch courts when they were supposed to, the game will be interrupted as soon as the foul is noticed and will be resumed once the players are on the correct side of the court.
In any of the cases, points received before fouls being noticed will not be cancelled.

5.14 Equipment and Uniform

Non-marking shoes only allowed on court.
